About the Mural
As part of this new initiative, we commissioned a mural from DC-based artist Maps Glover which covers several walls of our gallery and includes special augmented reality animations. The augmented reality of the mural can be brought to life by downloading the free app Artivive.
Maps Glover describes their process and the meaning behind the work:
"The mural came to life after a year of being locked up in quarantine with very little to look forward to. I wanted to create an experience that embodied the tension of the times but also the realease of that tension. The image depicts a bifurcated world of high, contrasting colors. The top half of the mural reveals a monochromatic world of organic cell-like forms feeding and pouring into itself. I call these forms 'matter'—they are a recurring symbol in my work as they speak to the endless states of matter whether they be mountains or man, everyting is matter."
About the Artist
"My name is Maps Glover, and art is my life. When I was a kid growing up in the cornfields of Maryland, the wide-open spaces and natural environment was the perfect storm for a kid with a big imagination. I would build worlds out of cardboard and sticks. I created games with rules for my friends to play and imagine we were anywhere other than where we were. For years I've continued to explore better ways to create those worlds and the games have become systems. My work is a journey through the mind and body the spaces and illustration are a manifestation of an internal dialogue."
