We are thrilled to announce that as of today – February 13, 2017 -- WPA is W.A.G.E. Certified. We are the first and only arts space between New York and Miami to receive this honor.
“This is an important milestone for us,” notes Peter Nesbett, WPA’s Executive Director. “It is a clear signal that we value all the artists we work with, not just for their output but also for the labor behind their projects.” Alexandra Silverthorne, an artist and WPA’s bookkeeper, drove the effort that led to certification.
According to the Working Artists and the Greater Economy (W.A.G.E.) website, “A W.A.G.E. Certified organization signals that it stands in solidarity with artists as part of an equitable community no matter what their material practice or reputation might be.” The certification program was founded “to establish and guarantee standards of minimum compensation and organizational support for artists in the non-profit arts economy. Its broader goal is to work toward the fairer and more equitable distribution of resources in the contemporary art field and in society at large.”
