barter
WPA member curator, Blair Murphy presented barter, a web-based, non-monetary silent auction. From July 3 - July 23, twenty items were put up for auction at www.barter-project.com and participants placed bids by proposing a good or service they would exchange for the auction item.
The auction closed at midnight on July 21 and the twenty participants who put items up for auction had until July 23 to choose which bid they wished to accept. Exchanged items were installed at the WPA Office for the closing reception on July 30, 2010 from 6-9pm. Though the project itself was modest in scope, barter's aim was to begin a dialogue about alternative economic models, blur the lines between producer and consumer, and create a space for the consideration of value beyond currency.
ABOUT COUP D’ESPACE
Coup d’Espace is WPA’s member-generated programming series. By inviting member artists and curators to plan installations, exhibitions, and events in its office project space, WPA provides a venue for unusual collaborations, exploration of new concepts, and the production of new and experimental work. Coup d’Espace allows artists and curators to utilize the WPA office as a laboratory or workshop space, to introduce new and in-process projects and present challenging ideas.
