WPA’s room featured DC-based artist Jimmy Miracle, as well as a selection of works on paper by WPA member artists. This selection of 8" x 8" works by artists working in a wide variety of media and styles highlighted the creativity and artistic diversity of WPA's artist members.
Jimmy Miracle, WPA's featured artist, works with mundane materials – from takeout containers and discarded air conditioning units to tree stumps and concrete - to construct sublime tableaus from the detritus of everyday life. With a weightless ease, his artifacts and installations transcend material reality, unsettling the viewer’s perception of the physical world. This stunning shift in perceived meaning and value – from worthless physical material to transcendent object – would be impossible without the meticulousness of the artist’s craft. Miracle himself sees the potential of these cast-offs and his dedication to a repetitive and meticulous labor thoroughly transforms them.
On Friday, October 5 at 2pm, Lisa Gold, WPA's Executive Director, moderated Performance Art: IMPACT, a panel discussion on performance featuring Claire Breukel (contemporary art curator and writer), Adam Budak (curator of contemporary art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden), Sarah Newman (curator of contemporary art, The Corcoran Gallery of Art), and Jefferson Pinder (performance artist). Check the (e)merge website for more information about the fair.
