Full Artist's statement
I use digital photography and printing to create pictures that do not look like photographs. Usually, I print the images myself on fine art papers. My process is about as close to “printmaking” in the traditional sense of the word as one can get using digital, rather than traditional tools. Every step involves the sort of technical and artistic choices made by any printmaker. My concern with the process of printing my pictures, as well as with shooting and editing them, makes my work is different from that of many photographers.
The variety of subject matter in my work reflects my interest in everyday things and events. It also reflects my attention to the small details and larger vistas of my world. In my pictures I heighten details to heighten viewers’ attention. I am trying to convey my sense of the place and moment and to get people thinking about the subject of the picture. I am pleased when people react to my work by recognizing the familiar, seeing it in a new way.
