Full Artist's statement
I am an artist, self-taught. I paint people because I am fascinated by the human quality of resilience. In every craggy face marked by life, I feel connection and compassion. In work-worn hands I see bearers of love. I search for a reflection of myself and a shared experience of life. I often use the newspaper as a source of reference material. It's images have become a lens through which I explore the chaos and complexity of life, as well as a call to respond to events around me. My work is quiet, raw, reflective of me. I love to bring the outside- in, literally, working with branches and stones, and to bring what is inside - out, to express my emotion. I enjoy briniging disparate materials and images together to create a (strange) new whole. A source of inspiration is this poem: "My heart was more disgraceful, more alone, and more courageous than the world has known. O passer-by my heart was like your own" (Violet Trefusis).
