In Medieval Europe, youths went door to door on All Souls Day. Precursors to trick-or-treaters, they offered songs for the dead in exchange for soul cakes (illustrated on the sides of the frame). The 2nd scene illustrates how Christians in Europe still observe November 2, while the 3rd scene showcases a Day of the Dead altar in the US. Radial patterns decorating the box are inspired by the face paint of revelers.
