Full Artist's statement
My approach to painting and drawing combines an affinity for capturing personal landscapes with an abiding concern for the ongoing environmental decline accelerated by today's political discord. This mindset is informed by an appreciation for the historic events, monumental spaces and landmark vistas experienced daily in the nation's capital. These interests have spurred a rigorous process, constantly documenting the progression of time through the context of it's impact on the natural and built environment. The works are informed by everyday experiences and signifcant events collected over the course of time.
My awareness of the continuing loss of natural beauty has evolved over the years as climate change, political strife and global development spurred on by relentless media saturation increasingly impacts our lives. This most recent body of work is an extension of the plein-air watercolors and studio oils of primeval settings and compelling scenes documenting vivid personal experiences.
Capturing the nuance, gesture or atmosphere of seminal events and settings experienced first hand allows me to promote an appreciation for sustainabilty and resilience and gives voice to resist political efforts that harm the natural environment and repress the expression of basic human rights.
