Full Artist's statement
My images have a mission: to capture both the rare and the everyday scenes that envelop me and to present them in a captivating way. It may be an image of a beckoning remote landscape in a foreign land, an ancient castle in the Irish countryside, a grieving sculpture in an enchanting Czech cemetery, jazzy street performers in Louisiana's French Quarter or the inner city roughness of street scenes of Washington, DC. For any subject, I want the images I create with my camera to generate unexpected thoughts and emotions in the viewer, and transport them to my mind's eye. It is my hope that my images impart candid awareness of details and reality that may otherwise go unnoticed in our rapid-fire world. I am inspired by both pictorialism and a modern painterly style created through digital technology available today to include the laying of various textures and digital layers of colors, tones and light. These additions added in the post processing phase create a feeling of time and place, or sometimes an ethereal or other worldly feeling. I don't question the source of my attraction to subjects I photograph. I am drawn to such a wide variety of cultures, people and architecture. I look for interesting light, perspectives and color, and then I compose the image to reveal details and emotions that are often missed by the casual observer, capturing a fleeting snippet in time. It is important to me to truly experience the moment I am in, as those moments change radically depending on uncontolled external factors. Photography has helped me explore my environment much more thoroughly and to seek beauty in uncommon places. I find both peace and energy through the creative process. It is my hope that my images of far-away places and icons that exist right around the corner, will inspire others to want to go outside their comfort zones to travel, see, and peruse our world. My goal is to record what I see, translate it through my processes, and then impart those images to the viewer. Through all my travels and images I create, what matters to me most is that I produce art that others want to put on their walls.
