Full Artist's statement
My artwork explores emotional themes through figures, conveying the energy and spirit of modern contemporary life. Eschewing the literal, I like to blur the real and the imagined to create powerful and ambiguous statements about the human condition. These figure works are not portraits of actual people, but rather of feelings and emotion. I try to inject tension in each piece, through scale and aggressive brushwork and often show people as raw and vulnerable. They appear to be private glimpses into real life - deeply personal moments. I am interested in developing a strong feeling unique to each painting, with the sole purpose of conveying emotion. My latest work not only explores some of the pain of contemporary life, but also celebrates resilience and recovery. I purposely leave visible the re-stated lines, dripped paint and other markings to imbue life and energy into the work. Filled with ambiguity, each canvas tells a story. By refraining from connecting all the dots, I leave it up to the viewer to make a personal interpretation.
