This painting is part of a series, “Out of Our Element,” that I began while living in Puerto Rico in 2004. After taking underwater portraits of friends in a swimming pool, I was captivated with how the reflections and refractions caught on film seemed to expose hidden aspects of their characters. I continue to photograph friends and family, including myself and my children, and I’m drawn to paint those that reveal the otherworldly, blissful, and ominous experience of being underwater. I aim for a faithful rendering of the images, which are too fantastical to invent.
