About Annie
If you couldn't be an artist, what would you do instead?
It's difficult to imagine not being an artist, but if we are suspending reality, I'll take it another step and do another dream career and study Latin American literature, especially the works of Roberto Bolaño and Jorge Luis Borges (in this fictional version of reality, I am fluent in Spanish). In the real world, I have to settle with reading translations.
What, for you, are the greatest benefits/challenges of being an artist?
The greatest benefit of being an artist is having a vehicle to express and challenge obsessive thinking about the visual world. The greatest challenge is living with the obsessive thinking until you come up with a way to make it into artwork that is something real and tangible.
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
I had an embarrassing studio moment when I looked out of my window and realized the elderly woman next door was watching me in fascination as I was beating a paintings surface with a broom to try and get the texture the way I wanted it. I can't even imagine what she thought I was doing!
What's the most indispensable item in your studio?
A gallon of Glidden flat black paint (well, many, but if we are talking about one). This is easily followed up with sisal rope and jute twine.
What work of art do you wish you owned?
There is a Willem Claesz Heda painting Still Life: Pewter and Silver Vessels and a Crab (1633-7) in the National Gallery in London that I'm obsessed with right now, but any Heda painting would probably be fine. The reflections on the pewter surface and the lemon peel in that painting are just exquisite.
What superpower would you have and why?
Being a human paint sprayer would be pretty useful in the studio--especially if I could avoid clogged nozzles.
Why should people support WPA or organizations like it?
The WPA and other area art non-profits keep vitality to the artistic community. It is hard to imagine the art scene in D.C. without the WPA supporting artists and creative output. They help diversify the scene and make opportunities for a wider variety of artists than more market-driven platforms. The support of emerging artists is key to ensuring continued growth even before other success is realized.
Do you have a website where we can see other examples of your artwork?
