Kevin Kepple's colorful abstract paintings are so intricately composed that the viewer can get lost in the surface.
In each work, the subtle random patterning blends seamlessly with the surrounding colors, often forming mono-
chromatic compositions. Every piece is a brilliant example of the juxtaposition of simplicity and complexity, a
balance the artist evokes with "a unique combination of assorted glues, hand-mixed inks, and varnishes." In addition
to his use of unconventional painting mediums, Kepple chooses to paint on wood panels instead of canvas –
he uses Baltic Birch and American Pine, amongst others.
The translucency of the glue medium that Kepple uses creates a cloudy depth that engenders further exploration ;
as your eye moves across the geometries and interlocking curves on the surface, color is transformed from deep to
light to solid to almost glowingly reflective, and the viewer is forced to confront the work from a very physical
perspective: Kepple's paintings beg the questions "What is this made of?" "How did it form?" and finally, "Where is the
logic?" Though the surface treatment of Kevin Kepple's paintings results in an elaborate and mysterious texture, the
n
end result is one of engaging simplicity.
Kevin Kepple utilizes a unique combination of assorted glues, handmixed inks, and varnishes to create
his richly textured, luminescent abstract paintings. Kepple is a Washington, DC, based artist who grew
up in rural southwestern Pennsylvania.
