AQUIFER
A survey of artists who explore the significance of water, articulating its aesthetic and spiritual qualities, highlighting an understanding of its science, and intensifying society's political awareness.
Because water has so many dynamic physical properties such as transpiration, evaporation, capillary action, conductivity, surface tension, and thermal transference, along with its biblical, poetic, romantic, divination and salvation themes, the curators feel that water’s inspirational potency is almost unlimited. Accordingly, we’re assembling an exhibition of sculptures by artists who are particularly compelled to address the physical, psychological, metaphysical, and aesthetic qualities of water. Deborah McLeod and J.W. Mahoney are two seasoned curators who have long shared a particular interest in water themes. J.W. Mahoney has regularly engaged the symbolic qualities of natural forces, in both writings and exhibitions, and Ms. McLeod is currently producing a film titled "Purification" on the ancient connection between river baptisms and the assignation of the natural feature as a source of reconciliation with the sublime. A color catalogue of the exhibit along with essays from the curators will be published.
CURATORS’ STATEMENT: From the political to the spiritual, the scientific to the economic, water pervades all aspects of human culture. This ubiquitous liquid makes its way into the nightly news in one form or another: We see it inundating an entire seaport city, or gathering into a gigantic tsunami, disabling multiple nations. We watch it transforming from polar ice caps into rising sea levels, while simultaneously becoming a vanishing resource that stirs countries towards war or revolt. We are formed aquatically, in amniotic fluid and remain comprised of about 60% of this miraculous meeting of hydrogen and oxygen. We assign metaphor and religiosity to water, cleansing our bodies and purifying our souls with its sanctifying qualities. Artists whose interests and themes explore some of the above properties and metaphors of water are encouraged to submit work for this exhibition. The curators are seeking original ideas that variously articulate water's beauty and spiritual qualities, augment understanding of its science, and intensify our society's political awareness.
LOCATION: Edison Place Gallery, 701 8th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20001
DATES: November 8 to December 19
CO-CURATORS: Deborah McLeod and J.W. Mahoney
ACCEPTING ENTRIES: May 2 to September 5 (received deadline)
PROGRAMS: The Curator/Artist Panel on November 15 will include representatives from local environmental groups in the hope of stimulating and informing a lively discussion of both the aesthetics and advocacy issues surrounding the role of water in our communities.

Gallery has 8 feet high ceilings, loading dock with standard double door to enter the gallery, movable walls and track lighting. • Because of the interior limitations and caretaking of this exhibition's venue, any inclusion of actual water as an element in the work, must be carefully conceived in every proposed design and approved by the Edison Gallery Director.
• Wall work to be compatible with the Arakawa System: http://www.arakawagrip.com/
ELIGIBILITY:
• The exhibition is open to members of Washington Project for the Arts and Washington Sculptors Group. Artists who are not current members may join either or both organizations.
